Transport Fever 3 Save File Location (Steam, GOG, Epic)
Every Transport Fever 3 save file location by store and OS: Steam userdata, GOG and Epic paths, what each folder holds, and how to back your saves up.
Transport Fever 3 does not keep your saves in the installation folder — every save game location that matters lives in a per-store userdata folder, and the address changes depending on where you bought the game and which system you play on. Below is the complete map, taken from the official wiki's Game File Locations page (checked October 12, 2026): the save file location for Steam (Windows, Linux and macOS), the AppData path GOG and Epic players use, what each file inside the saves folder actually does, and what to copy when you want a backup.
Quick answer: your save game location by store
| Store | Save location (the folder that contains /save) |
|---|---|
| Steam (Windows) | C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\<user-number>\3493540\local |
| Steam (Linux) | ~/.local/share/Steam/userdata/<user-number>/3493540/local |
| Steam (macOS) | /Users/<username>/Library/Application Support/Steam/userdata/<user-number>/3493540/local |
| GOG (Windows) | C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Transport Fever 3 |
| Epic (Windows) | C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Transport Fever 3 |
| GOG / Epic (macOS) | /Users/<username>/Library/Application Support/Transport Fever 3 |
| GOG (Linux) | ~/.local/share/Transport Fever 3 |
Your actual saves sit in the /save folder inside that directory; profile.lua next to it stores your campaign progress and your last saved game. Everything below breaks this down store by store.
Steam save file location (Windows, Linux, macOS)
On Steam, saves live inside the Steam userdata tree, keyed by the game's app id 3493540:
| Folder | Windows | Linux | macOS |
|---|---|---|---|
| Installation | C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Transport Fever 3 | ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Transport Fever 3 (or ~/.steam/steam/...) | /Users/<username>/Library/Application Support/Steam/steamapps/common/Transport Fever 3 |
| Userdata (saves) | C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\<user-number>\3493540\local | ~/.local/share/Steam/userdata/<user-number>/3493540/local (or ~/.steam/steam/...) | /Users/<username>/Library/Application Support/Steam/userdata/<user-number>/3493540/local |
Two practical notes:
<user-number>is not your friend code — it is the numeric account folder Steam creates per account. If several accounts share the PC, openSteam/userdata/and you will see one numbered folder per account; your saves are under the one whose subfolder contains3493540.- The installation folder is static game data. The official wiki explicitly warns against editing it manually, because a game update can reset the whole directory. Backing up your installation achieves nothing — your saves were never there.
GOG save location (Windows, Linux, macOS)
GOG players get a simpler, per-user path that does not depend on Steam's account folders:
- Windows:
C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Transport Fever 3 - Linux:
~/.local/share/Transport Fever 3 - macOS:
/Users/<username>/Library/Application Support/Transport Fever 3
If you installed through GOG Galaxy, you can also jump straight to the installation folder from the client: right-click Transport Fever 3 in your library (or use the More button next to Play), then Manage Installation → Show folder.
Epic save location (Windows, macOS)
Epic Games Store players use the same userdata convention as GOG:
- Windows:
C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Transport Fever 3 - macOS:
/Users/<username>/Library/Application Support/Transport Fever 3
The Epic installation folder defaults to C:\Program Files\Epic Games\TransportFever3 on Windows and /Users/Shared/EpicGames/TransportFever3 on macOS — but as with every store, the saves are not in there.
What is inside the userdata folder
The userdata directory is more than a saves folder — the official wiki documents every common entry, and knowing which is which matters when you back things up or troubleshoot:
| Entry | What it holds |
|---|---|
/save | Your save game files — the folder to back up |
profile.lua | Campaign progress and your last saved game |
settings.lua | Game settings (screen resolution, volume, …) |
settings_keys_v3.lua | Key bindings |
/mods | Manually installed mods — see the mods guide |
/mod_presets | Mod presets |
/save_maps | Maps created with the map editor |
/crash_dump | Crash reports and log files (see below) |
/screenshots, /keyframes, /recordings | Camera tool output |
/shader_cache | Cached shaders (internal — leave alone) |
Backing up or moving your saves
A minimal backup is two items: the /save folder and profile.lua. The first holds your individual saved games; the second remembers which campaign chapter you are on and which save was your latest, so copying the saves folder alone can leave the profile pointing at a save that is no longer there. Restoring on a new PC means putting both back under the same store's userdata path — Steam accounts restore under their own <user-number> folder, so match the folder structure rather than merging contents.
Do not copy anything from the installation folder to "be safe": per the official wiki it contains only static data and may be reset by updates. And if you play with manually installed mods, remember those live in /mods in userdata — a save that relies on a mod will not behave on a machine where the mod is missing.
Log files: when a save will not load
If a save misbehaves, the game's own logs are in /crash_dump inside userdata: .dmp files with machine-readable crash data, .json files, and the stdout.txt log — which is also the file our map seeds guide points to when you want to retrieve the seed of a map you already generated. The official wiki notes these logs include save-game loading information, which makes them the first thing to check before reinstalling anything.
FAQ
Where does Transport Fever 3 save games on Windows?
It depends on the store. Steam keeps saves in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\<user-number>\3493540\local, inside the /save subfolder. GOG and Epic keep them in C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Transport Fever 3. The installation folder never contains saves.
Where is the saves folder on macOS?
Inside your Library folder, which macOS hides by default: /Users/<username>/Library/Application Support/.... The official wiki notes the Library directory is hidden and documents revealing hidden folders in Finder (it lists Ctrl+Shift+.; on most Mac keyboards that toggle is Cmd+Shift+.). From there, Steam players follow Steam/userdata/<user-number>/3493540/local, and GOG and Epic players open the Transport Fever 3 folder.
Can I move my Transport Fever 3 saves to another PC?
Yes — copy the /save folder plus profile.lua from your userdata directory and restore both under the same store's path on the new machine. Keep the folder structure intact rather than merging folders, and reinstall any manually installed mods the save depends on.
Does the game sync saves to the cloud?
The official Game File Locations page documents only local folders — no cloud save location appears anywhere in it, as of October 12, 2026. Treat your local userdata backup as the source of truth; this page will be updated if the official documentation adds a cloud location.
